Although recent Kia products have increasingly catered to American tastes, until yesterday, none were actually built in America. A white 2011 Sorento rolled off an assembly line yesterday in West Point, Georgia, signaling a new chapter in the company’s history.
“The start of production for our first manufacturing facility in the United States further demonstrates our commitment to growth in North America, said Kia Motors America CEO B.M Ahn.
The plant, known as Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG), was built on 2200 acres of land, and ran Kia approximately $1 billion to build. The facility also includes a body stamping facility, a six-speed automatic transmission assembly line, and a two-mile test track. The facility alone employs approximately 2500 people, and at full capacity, can crank out 300,000 vehicles each year.
Look for the new 2011 Sorento to arrive at Kia dealers in January 2010.
