         Painting your calipers

By CyberGuyPR

This is a simple project that will make your Sorento look really cool. In just a couple of our it can be completed and achieve excellent results. Here is what you need:
  • Hi-temp spray paint. I used Plasti-kote HI TEMP 1500°F Aluminum
  • Old newspapers
  • Masking tape

Please follow basic safety precautions. Make sure your Sorento is in PARKING and the hand brake is engaged. also make sure the car is in a flat, even surface. It is always recommended to wear eye protection and gloves. Now, let's have fun...

Step 1.  Remove the 4 wheels and put the car on 4 jack stands (if you prefer do the front first, then the back). This would be a nice time to clean the inside of the rims.

Step 2. I had excellent results without removing the calipers. DON'T REMOVE THE CALIPERS unless you know what you are doing. Proceed to carefully mask the caliper with the old newspapers. Make sure you mask the disc, lines, bolts, rubber parts and anything else you don't want to hit. Keep in mind you only need to paint the front side and a couple inches back on the side and top, the rest is unseen when the wheel is on.

Step 3.  Please, don't forget to mask the wheel well. I'm sure you don't want caliper paint on your Sorento's body :-). Also cover the floor just to make sure you don't get anybody mad.

Properly masked wheel well.

Step 4. When all the calipers are properly masked, start applying a light paint coat, using short strokes in order to avoid any running and dripping. The Plasti-kote paint actually covers really good. After applying the first coat wait at least 15 minutes to apply the second one. After you make sure you have covered everything, leave it to dry around 2-3 hours.

Step 5. I didn't do this, but you should seriously consider it. Paint the drums now, or you will regret it. With time they will get a lot of rust and will take away the good look off newly painted calipers. Since I didn't do it the first time, I will have to do it soon cause they look bad!!!

Step 6. Remove all the masking. Reinstall wheels.

Step 7. Wash the SUV and shine those tires!!!

Awesome look after tire is installed!!
